Timed Essay 5
Newspapers in the UK are likely to be either left or right wing
in their ideologies in the way they represent the stories. This means that each
story we hear as consumers will be different per newspaper/ article.
The first newspapers cover (daily mail) represents the right
wing which means that people who prefer to read and agree with right wing beliefs
are more likely to read the daily mail as it agrees with its audience (reception
theory). The main coverline of the daily mail says, ‘hands off our election’
and this shows that we as English people own our country and should be proud about
it. This can be seen as a patriotic move by the daily mail and push their agenda
against any foreign outsiders to leave us alone. Binary opposition takes place
as it creates a good and evil in this country between the people as this could
be against other groups such as labour or any foreign outsider interference and
this could spark conflict between the political groups. The news values presented
here are an elite person (Theresa May) and elite nation (England/UK) this would
also affect and encourage the people of the UK so it would have a large
threshold.
The left-wing newspapers such as the daily mirror would have
presented this story in the opposite way by laughing at Theresa May and mocking
her for not being able to do her job properly. This is so that it would appeal
to their left-wing audiences as they are likely to have a preferred reading
(reception theory).
In the second newspaper cover from the mirror, it would appeal to both right-wing and left-wing audiences as it does not involve politics and more of an actual threat. This means that the whole of the country would be affected regardless of any politics involved as the terrorist attack was a result of religion. The story in this paper would have a large threshold, as it involves a lot of countries that threaten the USA or could be affected by this. News values presented here are an elite nation (USA) and an elite person (George Bush).
